Saltram is proud to be hosting the Forest School throughout the summer. Forest School is a Danish concept of learning in the outdoors which is quickly growing in popularity around the country. It focuses on building confidence, self-esteem, independence, motivation and environmental awareness through organised games and activities.
Led by our local Forest School leaders, Jen Reeley and Debbie Lowe who have many years experience working with children of all ages, students are given a safe and productive environment in which to learn and interact. Many of the activities can be linked to the national and early years curriculum, providing a fun way of learning and achieving goals.
It includes the existing historic Saltram Estate, which contains a Grade I listed property and Registered Park and Garden, as well as the restored landfill site at Chelson Meadow, the Woodland Trust's Hardwick Wood and a large area of privately owned land.
The area already supports a diverse range of wildlife habitats including ancient woodlands, flower-rich grasslands, mud flats, and a network of hedgerows. A number of businesses, including farms operate in the area and it is hoped they will continue to flourish in the Countryside Park.

Until the 29th March the plan for the park is under consultation, that's where you come in! Go to http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/saltrammasterplan and scroll down to the 'planning the park' section and click the link to tell us your views on the park. This is really important as the park is for the people of Plymouth and the surrounding area and we envision it will continue to play a part in the lives of the people of Plymouth for many years to come.

Ben Shapcotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11149593718584448984noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640630835402512093.post-11538148316244149402011-03-07T15:21:00.003+00:002011-03-07T16:10:14.259+00:00What does Mulching do?
Mulching is a protective covering placed over the soil to retain moisture and nutrients and prevent erosion and weeds growing, it can be a vital part of growing strong and healthy plants.

We are running a workshop focusing on the importance of mulching on the 11th March from 11.00 - 13.00, it's £5 a ticket and you will learn about all aspects of mulching and how it can be put to practical use in your own garden.

Call us on 01752 333503 for more information and booking.Ben Shapcotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11149593718584448984noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640630835402512093.post-72755744533732122452011-02-18T11:59:00.004+00:002011-02-18T12:34:34.812+00:00Volunteer Open Day at Antony

Image: © NTPL/Andrew Butler

For the smiling faces...

For the community...

For the amazing stories...

For learning new skills and making new friends...

Volunteers get involved in our work at Antony in Torpoint in many different ways.

This year's peregrine chicks were old enough to be handled so they were ringed on Saturday. Dale Jackson, a trained ringer, licensed by the British Trust of Ornithology, abseiled down to the nest and put small, lightweight rings on the chicks’ legs. The female peregrine was in a tree at the time and the male nowhere to be seen. The female showed some concern when the ringer approached the nest but had been more bothered by another peregrine entering her territory earlier in the day.

The whole process was very quick and painless for the chicks and lasted no more than 10 minutes. The female peregrine was back on the nest within 20 minutes of Dale leaving and has since shown normal behaviour - feeding the chicks regulary and leaving them alone on the nest for short periods of time. She probably wondered what on earth was going on but has not been affected by the disturbance.

Dale reported that both chicks were doing well and was able to tell us that we have one female and one male chick. The female is already the larger of the two.
The rings on our chicks will allow us to identify them as Plym peregrines. Perhaps in a few years’ time we will receive news that our chicks have gone on to breed successfully somewhere else in the country or maybe they will return to breed in Cann Quarry if the territory becomes available.

With the ability to identify individual birds we can gather more information about their movements, habits and breeding which all goes to help inform conservation measures to protect them. This could complete the picture for the Plym Peregrine Project by allowing us to confirm that our chicks survive into adulthood, making our efforts to protect the peregrines that extra bit more worthwhile.
